Reaching the News Desk – Christine Bowley

What makes a story newsworthy? Our guest today receives thousands of story pitches every week, and today she shares her top tips for making sure your story stands out.

Christine Bowley is the Assistant News Director at 6abc Action News in Philadelphia. In her role, she’s helped to recruit and grow talent, as well as shift the news room towards today’s new digital streaming goals and platforms. For a story to be considered newsworthy, it has to be appealing to the media as well as the public. But she also discusses the critical importance of understanding who to approach, and the right time to engage them.

Christine started her career in Washington DC after graduating from the University of Maryland with a Broadcast Journalism and Economics Double Major. Since then, she has produced news casts in Raleigh, North Carolina, where she won 2 regional Emmys and also earned her MBA. She led news rooms in Jacksonville and Tampa, Florida before returning to the North East.

In this short snippet from her full-length interview, Christine talks about what people can do to gain the attention of the News Directors like her.
